Fairfax County clay and how to work with it

Large parts of Fairfax County sit on clay-heavy soils, including the shrink-swell “marine clay” found around Springfield, Burke, Annandale and Fairfax Station. Clay drains slowly, cracks in dry spells and smothers roots in wet ones. What helps:

Add organic matter. Mix bulk compost or leaf mulch compost (Virginia only) into the top few inches of new beds.
Raise your beds. Topsoil & compost mix on top of native clay gives plants a well-drained root zone.
Move water away from the house. #57 bluestone is the standard for French drains, dry wells and downspout trenches.
Mulch every spring. 2–3 inches of double shredded hardwood mulch keeps clay from crusting over.

Popular Fairfax County orders

Reston, Vienna and Oakton homeowners order a lot of black and brown dyed mulch each spring. Larger lots in Great Falls, Clifton and Fairfax Station order 4–8 inch river rock for dry creek beds and slopes, plus kiln-dried firewood in the fall. Homeowners building patios order mason sand and #8 bluestone. Watch every material up close on our product videos page.
