Most of Anne Arundel County sits on Maryland’s coastal plain. Soils near the Bay and the Severn, South and Magothy rivers tend to be sandy and drain fast, while newer neighborhoods in Odenton, Crofton and Gambrills are often built on compacted fill. Both are hard on plants. A few habits help:

Feed sandy soil. Working 2–3 inches of bulk compost or Orgro compost into beds helps sandy soil hold water and nutrients.
Give new-build yards a fresh start. Spread screened topsoil before seeding, or use our topsoil & compost mix for gardens and raised beds.
Mulch 2–3 inches deep. Double shredded hardwood mulch slows evaporation in sandy beds and holds better in the wind off the water.
Use stone where water runs. #57 bluestone works for French drains and downspout runs, and river rock makes a clean, decorative drainage bed.
